Each time, the technology was not inherently good or bad. The crisis emerged because human wisdom did not scale with human power .
Now we face the next iteration: agentic AI is making execution cheap.
And once again, we are unprepared.
What We Mean by "Cheap Execution"
Execution is the loop from intention to reality:

The Weaponization of Doubt
When anyone can generate "evidence," the strategy shifts from proving your case to creating enough doubt that people give up on truth entirely.
If every claim has a counter-claim, every source has a counter-source, every expert has a counter-expert—all generated on demand—then the public defaults to:
- Believing whatever confirms their identity
- Trusting whoever feels emotionally resonant
- Giving up on discernment altogether
This is epistemic collapse: not ignorance, but the inability to know how to know.
The Attention Economy on Steroids
Social media already optimized for engagement over truth. Now, agents multiply the speed and sophistication of that optimization:
- Content generated to maximize outrage, fear, tribalism
- Infinite variations tested to find the most addictive format
- Personalization so precise that each person inhabits a custom reality
The result is not a shared public square. It's a billion isolated echo chambers, each perfectly tuned to keep you engaged, reactive, and manipulable.
The Third Consequence: Institutional Erosion Accelerates
Institutions depend on scarcity to function:
- Expertise matters when not everyone can sound like an expert
- Credentials matter when not everyone can produce professional-quality work
- Gatekeeping matters when not everyone can publish
- Authority matters when not everyone can claim it convincingly
Cheap execution undermines all of this.
Expertise Devalued
If an agent can explain quantum physics, draft legal documents, or diagnose medical conditions—fluently and on demand—why trust experts?
The problem is not that agents are always wrong. The problem is that they're often convincingly wrong . And non-experts can't tell the difference.
When everyone has access to expert-sounding output, actual expertise becomes harder to identify—and easier to dismiss.
Institutions Lose Legitimacy
Trust in media, government, science, and education is already fragile. Cheap execution accelerates the collapse:

The crisis is not that agents exist. The crisis is that we are deploying them into a society that lacks the infrastructure to handle them.
The solution is not to stop agents. The solution is to urgently build the anchors and train the builders.

Schools must shift from information transmission to governance training. Students must learn to formulate problems, evaluate truth, think in systems, act responsibly.
2. Civic Epistemic Training
Mass programs in epistemic discipline: how to judge sources, triangulate claims, hold uncertainty, resist manipulation.
3. Institutional Adaptation
Governments, media, academia must develop new mechanisms for maintaining authority and trust in a high-velocity information environment.
4. Ethical Standards and Accountability
Clear frameworks for responsible use of agents—at individual, institutional, and societal levels. Not bans, but boundaries.
5. Cultural Grounding
Revive civilizational memory. Strengthen shared narratives. Protect depth against the tide of noise.
6. Builder Identity at Scale
Train an entire generation to see themselves as active participants in civilization-building, not passive consumers.
Conclusion: The Stakes Could Not Be Higher
The arrival of cheap execution is not a problem to be solved. It's a phase transition in human civilization.
Like the printing press, like the industrial revolution, like the internet—this will transform everything. The question is not whether transformation happens, but whether we govern it or it governs us.
If we act now, with urgency and coherence, we can build a civilization that is powerful and wise.
If we don't, we will have built the most sophisticated tools for our own fragmentation.
The hidden crisis is not that execution is cheap.
